Uber X Car Requirements

Becoming an Uber driver is great, but you need to know the requirements for your vehicle in order to know what is acceptable to drive and what is not.

The most basic and most common category people fall under is being an Uber driver for Uberx. This page will show you the vehicle requirements for UberX.

What Is UberX

UberX is the most common service for requesting a ride to be picked up. This service is a low cost option (cheaper than a taxi).

Instead of requesting rides by hailing a cab or calling for a taxi, you now can simply request a ride through your phone app and typically be picked up within minutes.

This benefits suburban areas immensely. You now have Uber drivers picking you up in areas where you would never be able to hail for a cab because they don’t drive down your street.

Some examples of vehicles that you would drive in would be a Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, or Hyundai Sonata which is what I use for Uber.

Uber Car Requirements

Each Uber service has a different set of car requirements. UberX, the most basic Uber service will accept basically any 4-door car providing it is of a certain age.

However, when you decide to drive for Uber Black, a more professional car service, there will only be a handful of different types of cars that will be accepted.

Every person that wants to be an Uber driver must meet these basic requirements regardless of the Uber service you choose to drive for:

  • You must be 21 years of age or older.
  • You must Have a U.S. Driver license for at least a year.
  • You must have an in-state Drivers License.
  • You must have in-state license plates
  • Have current car registration
  • Car Insurance reaching the minimal state requirements (Name must show on your policy)
  • You must have a clean driving record.
  • You must pass a criminal background check.

UberX Car Requirements

Below is a list of the car requirements to qualify to be an UberX driver:

  • Model Year: Must be 2002 or newer*
    • 2002 or newer: Los Angeles, San Francisco
    • 2005 or newer: New Jersey
    • 2008 or newer: New York
  • Body Type: Any with 4 full, independently opening doors
  • Seating: Must have seats AND seat belts for 4 passengers (excluding driver)
  • Must Have current car registration
  • No Cosmetic damage or missing pieces
  • No rental vehicles
  • No marked, taxi, or salvage titled vehicles
  • No commercial branding or taxi color paint jobs
  • No large passenger vans or commercial/Heavy Duty trucks
  • Must pass the Uber car inspection

* Car year requirements vary by city and are subject to change at Uber’s discretion.

    • Hey Gajanan,
Uber currently does not accept Town Cars for driving. I believe it’s because it resembles too much like a taxi cab.

  1. Hello,

I have a 2015 Honda civic EX-L Navi with leather seats. I live in Orange county. I always get customer asking that if they got uberx or select.

    Uber Select Car Requirements:
    • Model Year: Must be 2008 or newer
    • Body Style: Must be a 4-door vehicle
    • Leather or vegan leather interior required

Now, will they make an exception for my car?

    • Hey Brian,
Unfortunately, I don’t think Uber would be able to make an exception. Honda Civics are good reliable cars, but it’s also an everyday car. Not a luxury car. It’s awesome that you get a lot of compliments, which means your ratings I can assume are good. I hope you’re enjoying driving.
      Best Regards,
      Brandon

  2. I have a 2013 Honda Crosstour black ex-l model and so many of my customers I pick up they ask me is this Uber select and when I tell my customers that I’m an Uber x they are surprised by that.

    • Hey Jordan,
I feel ya man. There’s plenty of nice cars that aren’t on the Select list, but unfortunately they can’t all be added. Though, that’d be cool…
      Best Regards,
      Brandon

  3. I’m here in San Diego and I saw Uber and Lyft stickers on a Chevy Spark and a Honda Fit. Has that changed? How did they pass the requirement?

    • Hey Rebecca,
With your question, I was doing some reading up on the Chevy spark. It appears, like you said, that some but not all are being accepted for UberX. It appears that you might be able to get approved providing that your car can seat 5 people instead of the typical 4. I would also assume you gotta have the 4 outside door handles as well. Honda Fit is already a 4 door 5-seater car so it makes sense for people getting approved for the Honda Fit.
      Best Regards,
      Brandon

  4. I noticed here in Portland, Oregon that the Ford Focus is limited to 2014 and newer.

I am currently looking at a 2015 model specifically for the purpose of driving with Uber.

What is the reason for the 2014 year limit?
Will I be affected next year with 2015 model?
Will I only be eligible to drive with Uber for two years if I purchase this 2015 Sedan?

    • Hey Joe,
In Portland any vehicle 2007 or newer (2008 or newer in 2017) should qualify for UberX. I’m curious where you saw the 2014 limit? My only guess would be that it was under Uber Select, although I didn’t see the Focus on the Select list. I hope that helps clear things up.
      Best Regards,
      Brandon
P.S. If you do find the page that shows the Ford Focus being limited to 2014 or newer please send me the link.

    • Hey Paul,
Restricted models mean they are vehicles that Uber doesn’t approve at all for any of their services. 2 door cars is one example that a car might be restricted. I believe the Chevy Spark has only two door handles on the outside? That is probably the reason.
      Best Regards,
      Brandon

      • I Ave a 2017 Chevy Spark and it is a four door and HAS handle on each door. Also the doors are large for a small vehicle and easy to get in or out.

        • Hey Dennis,
If that is the case for your vehicle, having the 4 door handles, then maybe Uber will make an exception. Let me know how it goes.
          Best Regards,
          Brandon

  5. I have a 2014 Chevy spark, went through the sign up process and passed everything and submitted all documents needed all accepted. Then read this article and found out Chevy spark was on restricted list, wish I knew before I went through the whole process. What a disappointment.

    • Ya it’s unfortunate that not all cars qualify. I think part of the reason is because it’s 2 doors. Or at least only has two door handles.
      Best Regards,
      Brandon

    • were you finally accepted/ My 2014 Spark has 4 door handles but can only seat 4 adults…including the drive…I am waiting to see if was approved. I cannot seat 5 adults b/c the middle of the back seat has a cup holder in it.

      • Hey Lola,
Uber requires you to be able to fit 4 passengers for UberX(You and 4 others). If you wanted to qualify to drive, your middle cup holder would have to transform into a middle backseat to sit in.
        Best Regards,
        Brandon

    • Hey Noor,
Unfortunately Salvage or Rebuilt won’t get approved to drive for Uber.
      Best Regards,
      Brandon

  6. this is an awesome post!

I have always wondered how I could become an Uber driver!

I had no idea there were different classifications and requirements for Uber drivers.

I don’t have a car that is newer that 2001 so I am going to have to get one before I become an UberX driver.

    • Hey Evan,

since UberX is the most common service used people don’t always think about the higher services that cost more, but like you said they have different requirements because the cost of services are different.

If you decide to get a newer car make sure it’s not 2001. Try to get a car that’s a few years newer because every year the car year requirements go up a year too.

      Best Regards,

      Brandon

  7. Living in Texas you will find that most people here are so spread out it is not very common for us to use any transportation other than personal vehicles.
But I have to admit after using Uber for the first time last week I love it!
I wanted to go out and have a few drinks so it made the stress of driving under the influence a non-issue. My drivers to and from were very friendly and I got to sit in the front seat. This is pretty cool stuff.
The drivers told me they had no problems getting work so if anyone is considering this for a job or extra income I think it’s a good opportunity.
    Now I’ll have to check out the other Ubers and see if I can ride in style(;

    • I get it when you say not all parts of Texas use many others ways of getting around other than their own personal vehicle. It’s a common thing in the suburbs and rural areas. Glad you enjoyed your first ride the other week. I constantly get first time riders when I pick people up in my area.

Glad to hear that people in other parts of the country are making decent money with Uber. Need more people talking about it so everyone knows it’s not just the big cities where you can make a lot of money in.

Do be sure to check out the other car services. It’s worth taking at least one trip in a more luxurious car.

      Best Regards,

      Brandon
